In 2006 we released 1275 pheasants at 42 locations in Ozaukee County and Sheboygan counties. 925 hen pheasants and 320 roosters made up the release. Our goal, as always, is to boost up populations in our bird areas and extend our current breeding stock.
Current crow counts have been encouraging. When we started this program there were no natural birds in Ozaukee County except for what escaped from an occasional game farm or hunt club. Counts are done two weeks before the release date and birds are seen and heard frequently around the area. Spotting pheasants in Ozaukee County is no longer rare. The best time to hear roosters crowing is early in the morning, particularly in the northern half of the county where habitat is abundant for their survival. We do releases at state and federal waterfowl reproduction areas also. The upper 60% of Ozaukee County has been planted with birds and we continually scope out new territory for release sites.
Along with our pheasant program, our chapter also contributes to other programs. These include an annual contribution to area hunter safety programs and donations to the Huiras Lake Wildlife Area Project and UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources. |
